Allergies are a reaction of the immune system to a substance that is normally harmless to most people. These substances, called allergens, can include pollen, dust mites, pet dander, certain foods, and some medications. When a person with allergies comes into contact with an allergen, their immune system produces antibodies that can cause a range of symptoms, including sneezing, itching, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis.

This is one of many available treatments for allergies.

  1. Stinging nettle: Take 300-600 milligrams of freeze-dried nettle leaf capsules or tablets three times daily with meals, or brew nettle tea by steeping one teaspoon of dried nettle leaves in a cup of boiling water for 10-15 minutes, and drink up to three cups daily.
  2. Butterbur: Take 50-75 milligrams of standardized butterbur extract twice daily. It’s important to note that raw butterbur contains compounds that can be harmful to the liver, so it’s recommended to use standardized extracts that have had these compounds removed.
  3. Quercetin: Take 500 milligrams of quercetin supplements twice daily. Quercetin is best absorbed when taken with meals.
  4. Goldenseal: Take 250-500 milligrams of goldenseal supplements twice daily. Goldenseal should not be taken for more than two weeks at a time, as it can cause digestive upset and potentially harm the liver.
